Look What Arvin Built!

Hoping to check out their skatepark, Tony Hawk Foundation staff visited Arvin, California (population 20,000) in 2013.

What they found was a dismal collection of dilapidated ramps on a dusty concrete slab. Screws showed through the backs of the ramps. There were holes you could put your entire foot through. Some of the ramps had been removed because they were too far gone. In the corner sat a group of teenagers who said that they were interested in seeing the park improved, but hadn’t been successful in previous efforts. THF helped get the skaters organized and connected with local community groups, and four years later they were celebrating the Grand Opening of their new, permanent, concrete skatepark.
