Blue Park Grand Reopening – Brooklyn, NY

Community members, advocates, and skaters gathered on July 16th to celebrate the opening of Brooklyn’s newly renovated skatepark, Blue Park. The exciting reopening marked the first opportunity for local skaters to use the refurbished skate obstacles after The Skatepark Project and Vans Skateboarding collaborated with local officials to restore the beloved East Williamsburg park.

For decades, Martinez Playground has served as a multi-use neighborhood enclave known for its large blue rectangular color scheme and smooth skating surface, cherished by Brooklyn skateboarders and quad skaters. Over the years, these passionate local skaters created homemade skate obstacles to supplement those installed by NYC Parks. But over time, these temporary obstacles deteriorated, increasing the risks for local skaters.

In response to the urgent need for an updated and more accessible skate spot, the newly refurbished Blue Park replaces the dilapidated obstacles in-kind with contemporary upgrades and a recoated surface. Click HERE to  see the updated park and grand opening highlights from this very special day!

Only 500 of these decks were made and proceeds will directly support TSP’s Fellowship Program, a yearlong advocacy, education, and design opportunity for young Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) skate enthusiasts.

Check out this video to see the artist’s creative process and pick one up for yourself to support this impactful program.
